Is Swedish permanent residence a separate standalone process?
In most cases, it is requested as part of extending your current residence permit.
Can permanent residence be revoked?
Yes. The Swedish Migration Agency states it can be revoked if you no longer reside in Sweden or if key information was inaccurate.
Are requirements the same for everyone?
No. The required residence period, documents, and process depend on your current permit type.

Swedish citizenship for adults is decided by the Swedish Migration Agency under the Nationality Act. From 6 June 2026 there are no transitional arrangements: applications not yet decided on that date are assessed under the new rules. The main habitual-residence period increases from five to eight years, orderly-life checks tighten, and new maintenance and knowledge rules apply (including phased citizenship testing managed with UHR from August 2026).

Do older applications follow the pre-2026 five-year rule?
No transitional arrangements apply. The Swedish Migration Agency states that cases not decided before 6 June 2026 are assessed under the new rules.

Is the Swedish citizenship main residence rule now 8 years?
