Visa & Immigration Guide for Netherlands
This guide covers all main visa routes for non-EU professionals moving to Netherlands, including eligibility requirements, processing times, fees, and step-by-step application instructions.
Applying from your home country:
Not a degree holder? You're still welcome.
Netherlands has dedicated visa routes for trade workers, care workers, seasonal workers, and apprentices — no university degree required. The visa types table below includes Kennismigrant and EU Blue Card routes, regular work permits (GVVA), startup and seasonal routes, and more — expand each row for steps and official links. Further down you’ll find deeper guides for essential workers and entrepreneurs.
Visa Types at a Glance
| Visa type | Who it's for | Processing | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highly Skilled Migrant Permit (Kennismigrant) | The primary route for non-EU knowledge workers sponsored by a Dutch employer recognised by the IND. Leads to permanent residence after 5 years. Fast-tracked processing compared to the standard work permit. | 2–4 weeks | €192 |
| EU Blue Card | Non-EU workers with a higher-education diploma (≥3 years, evaluated by Nuffic if foreign) or 5+ years of relevant experience (3 years for IT managers/professionals). Choose over Kennismigrant when EU mobility or faster long-term EU residency matters; Kennismigrant suits lower salaries with a recognised sponsor. | 2–8 weeks | €192 |
| Regular Work Permit (GVVA) | Workers with a job offer from a Dutch employer who must obtain UWV approval and demonstrate no suitable EU candidate is available. | 8–16 weeks | €192 |
| Startup Visa | Non-EU entrepreneurs with an innovative business idea and a contract with an approved facilitator (not a passive investor route). | 12–16 weeks | €192 |
| Seasonal Work Permit | Workers hired for peak-season roles where the employer has seasonal work authorisation. Not a standalone path to permanent residence. | 4–8 weeks | €192 |
| DAFT Visa (Dutch-American Friendship Treaty) | Allows US citizens to live and work in the Netherlands as self-employed entrepreneurs or freelancers. Unique to US nationals under the bilateral 1956 treaty; no equivalent for other non-EU nationals. | 8–12 weeks | €192 |
| Orientation Year Permit (Zoekjaar) | Allows recent graduates from top universities (including non-EU institutions on the IND list) to stay in the Netherlands for one year to look for work or start a business. No job offer required. | 2–4 weeks | €192 |
| Family Reunification | Spouses, registered partners, and children under 18 of Dutch residents can join them. The sponsor must meet income requirements and have adequate housing. | 12–24 weeks | €192 |

Essential Worker & Trade Visas
Netherlands has a growing demand for skilled tradespeople and essential workers across construction, hospitality, logistics, and agriculture. These visas are available for workers without university degrees.
Regular Work Permit (GVVA) for Essential Workers
The combined residence and work permit (GVVA) for essential workers in agriculture, construction, logistics, and hospitality. The employer applies for a TWV labour-market test via UWV before IND can grant the permit.
- Employer applies on your behalf via UWV (labour authority)
- Employer must demonstrate no suitable EU candidate is available
- Salary must meet the sector minimum wage
- Permit is tied to the employer initially
