Healthcare in Ireland — Expat Guide

Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) provides public care once you are ordinarily resident; most workers pay for GP visits privately while accessing subsidised hospital services.

How to register for healthcare

  1. Confirm you meet HSE ordinary residence rules — usually living in Ireland for at least one year or intending to stay at least one year.
  2. Use the HSE Health Atlas to find GP practices accepting patients in your area.
  3. Register directly with a chosen GP; there is no national health-insurance enrolment step for employees.
  4. Expect to pay privately for GP visits (typically around 45–65 euro in urban areas); hospital charges depend on Category 1 vs Category 2 eligibility.
  5. Optional private health insurance is available from Irish insurers if you want faster access to certain services.
